ROUND THREE - Saturday, May 31, 2008 - Rebels vs. Eagles
Result: Rebels 35 - Eagles 106

The Rebels went into round 3 full of confidence after a strong performance the previous weekend against the new comers in Ottawa. Coach Monty once again assembled a full squad of 22 players but he still had 5 key players missing for the big clash against the reigning premier.

Strong starts have been a trademark of the Rebels season so far and this game was no exception. The boys came out strong notching the first goal early in the quarter, led by some solid play from Monty across half back and good movement from the half forwards in particular Jean “Frog” St. Louis and second gamer Matt “JT” Ramsden the Rebels went into the first break with a slender 1 point lead.

The second quarter saw the Eagles come out strong against the inexperienced Rebels. The intensity of the game picked up and the Rebels soon found out why the Eagles have the won the last two flags. The Rebels backline led by 3rd gamer Tyler Skillen playing his first game at full back was something to see. Tyler repelled many forward attacks and was aided by some good play from veteran Nik Paps, unfortunately the constant forward pressure saw the Eagles take a handy 4 goal lead into the main break.

The third quarter was another tough one for the Rebels, the Eagles midfield running game was getting on top and the Rebels and the forwards were not seeing too much of the play. Chris Behie and Matt Dunnigan had solid quarters but the Eagles held an insurmountable 50 point lead at the last change.

A spirited Rebels team came out for the last quarter, having lost too more experienced players to injury the rookies showed some great on field presence and the boys managed to post a couple more majors in the last quarter with some great team footy. Although disappointed with the loss, Coach Monty took a lot of positives out of the game and he has great confidence that the Rebels will be a tough prospect for all teams as the season progresses.

Round 4 sees the Rebels take on the Gargoyles on their home ground; this is a pivotal game and could go a long way in deciding who will take the 5th spot at seasons end. Let’s have another big turnout lads and see you all at training.

The Rebels would like to wish Frogga all the best after breaking his jaw in the second quarter on the weekend and all the best also to Assistant Coach Drago who had his second knee reconstruction this past week.

Hope it is a speedy recovery for you both.
